Newham Writers Workshop

For

New & Experienced Writers

Workshops held at

St John's Church, Stratford Broadway

Newham Writers Workshop is a co-operative of writers in the London Borough of Newham. The Workshop began in 1986 as Forest Gate Writers Workshop, an adult education class, at Forest Gate School. We have since become an independent group, running ourselves as a co-operative. In 1998 we moved to Sarah Bonnell School in Stratford and in 2000 moved to the new Art Centre, Stratford Circus. In 2003 we moved to our current venue, St John's Church, Stratford Broadway.

We are a sociable, multi-ethnic group, our membership ranging from beginners to published writers. Current members' writing spans short stories, novels, biography, poetry, journalism, drama, travel writing, children’s etc. The Workshop doesn’t teach writing, we learn by members bringing their work to the Workshop. In a typical evening we might discuss three or four pieces. As we hear the pieces, we take into account the experience of the writer (we have all been beginners) and what he or she is trying to do, and so encourage the writer to continue or, perhaps, to rewrite.

We publish an anthology every year during the summer term which we launch in September as a celebration of the previous year’s work, as a reunion for old members, and an invitation to new members to join the workshop.

Writing can be an arduous, lonely task, and who better to understand that than other writers? So if you are writing, or are thinking of writing, and live anywhere near us then why not come along to one of our meetings, and find out if we are what you are looking for? The cost is £25 per term (loosely based on school terms) if you are employed and £12 if you are on benefits.

Why not come along and try us out for an evening (for which there is no charge)?
