Serwa Kyeremateng
I am from Ghana, West Africa, but London has been my home for a great number of years. My writing is very much influenced by my African background. I have a great love of all types of creative writing from poetry to novels. I am, at present, working on a novel that deals with African Gods and how they are integral to the society in which they operate. The two poems, which I have submitted, also, bear influences of my roots.
JOY
White stark sterile antiseptic
Blood screams pain bittersweet
Cursing shouting talking in tongues
Fresh raw tearing splitting
Pulling tugging wrestling plenty of pushing
"What is it?" "It's a boy"
Hugging crying laughing kissing
Mending sewing plenty of fixing
Resting thinking
Sleeping praying
Thank you God
For my bundle of Joy
THE UNBORN
Full of warmth pure light sun bright,
Colours hues so beautiful so wondrous
For all too imagine.
Ageless timeless contentment
Laughter, play fun oh such joy
Full of love not pain.
Never think, never wish never desire,
The constraints, the limitations, the mundane,
I am spiritual not physical
Never to depart this magical place
A spirit child not to be born.
I LIE WITH DREADED FINGERS
I lie with dreaded fingers dancing on my face.
Dry grass like a halo on my pillow.
Cold icicles digging into the bedclothes.
Where is lady sunshine to warm?
Where is lady sunshine to caress?
Only darkness surrounds, choking instead.
Incense burning with urgent pungency.
Mother earth is waiting.
Mother earth is beckoning.
Shadows dance in party spirit.
Wax melts in unison.
Time is weary.
Time is slow.
Here comes those exotic dancers all dressed in black.
Feet so light but heavy on the heart.
The dance is slow, quick, quick, slow.
Time has come to join in the dance, to take the floor.
Shake from side to side, twist and writhe, clap and shout.
But no smile, no laughter this dance, only a lonely dance.
No lady sunshine to warm.
No lady sunshine to caress.
Time has come.
No time for more goodbyes, or sadness, no more pain
Bright lights white lights I'm happy again.
Peace, serenity, calmness, children's laughter, toys, holidays, people.
They are all here then gone again
Time to go, no more time to stay
lady sunshine is warming me, lady sunshine is caressing me.
