Belinda Everiste

The man from above was written after many years of unwillingly attending church, wondering who was this person that I was supposed to thank for my existence, and realising that I was not alone in thinking these thoughts. Thus, being the inquisitive person that I am, I wrote this poem as a series of questions to no-one in particular, so do not really expect any answers that I haven't already considered myself, but failed to answer the questions with their being so much contradiction between religion, science and history.

The Man from Above

I know there's a God but I'm puzzled
Because of science and history
Oh for how long I have juggled
The notion of whether or not he loves me.

Yes I've been christened, I'm Christian
But this has done nothing you see
To make my thoughts clear, how I wish I could hear
The sounds of his voice next to me.

Oh I know that there's somebody up there
Above in the beautiful sky
Don't ask me why, it's a feeling I try
To explain but cannot justify.

The Bible has been interpreted
So the truth will never be known
And it is this that keep me pondering
By myself, on the streets all alone.

Why does he (or she) allow such behaviour
In my home, in the streets, in the world
Why do they even allow me to even question their existence
Why is my head in so much of a whirl?

Allah, Mohammed, The prophet, The man
Who is he- how did he come to be
And if Adam and Eve were the first people on Earth
Then where were the Dinosaurs?

If Adam and Eve were the first to be made
Why are we not all of one race
Why are we not all related
And why do we have different religions?

He allows me to think things that shouldn't be thought
He allows me to envy and hate
He allows adults to harm little children
He allows men to kill, beat and rape.

Maybe it's because I think too much
Maybe I just want to feel loved
Or maybe it's because I just want to see
that invisible man from above.
